We all have heard people say “the truth will set you free.” For many years when I heard this from “Christians” it went in one ear and out the other because I didn’t see any freedom. I thought “If the truth will set you free, how come you’re bound with anger, judgement, and self-righteousness?” To be clear I am not saying all the “Christians” I knew weren’t free, but definitely the ones telling me I needed to get right with God didn’t appear to be free. Katy and I have been walking a path of enlightenment the last few years. We have learned so much from great teachers, theologians, and authors. Our greatest growth has happened when we rest in the Trinity’s unconditional love. On this path layers of wrong beliefs continue to be lifted from our eyes. Some of what we believed a year ago has changed, and we both know this will continue to happen. The journey has changed our lives and we are excited to continue on this path in the garden of Pleasure. The Hebrew word we have translated as Eden is Pleasure. We are in the Garden of Pleasure, God’s creation for our enjoyment.
Katy and I had very different childhoods. I grew up attending church but never hearing the gospel, Katy seldom went to church. Our lives crossed paths on our individual quests to find peace. In many ways talking about our journeys since birth has helped us understand the foundations others come from and this has helped us minister to others together as well. We both believe in the scriptural foundation that we all need “to guard our hearts with diligence for out of it are the issues of life.” -Proverbs 4:23 KJV.
Our personal journeys and our journey as a couple have been influenced both positively and negatively from who and what we have allowed to sow into our hearts. A few months ago as I was listening to Wm. Paul Young, the author of the Shack, he explained how when people ask him if he is a Christian, he asks them to tell him what they think or believe a Christian is before he answers. The reason is Paul may not line up to the definition of what the person asking the question believes a Christian is. This is only a small part of the message I was listening to but it lead to many great discussions, and much thought. The answer to the question as to what a Christian is varies. 2 of the most common ways people describe “being a Christians” are; 1) Followers of Jesus or 2) Believers in Jesus. One invokes works, the other invokes relief, but both come from the honest desire to live in Freedom.
Katy and I believe; Jesus is our savior, but also the Savior of the entire world. God is love and love never fails! We believe God loves all of mankind. We believe God loved us so much that He sent His Son Jesus to save us from the darkness that wrong belief causes.
The Apostle Paul warned the Corinthians and all believers to beware of preachers and teachers who mislead people with work based messages proclaiming that we are separated from God. The idea that God only loves us because of Jesus’s sacrifice places a barrier between us an our Father. God loves us regardless of Jesus’s sacrifice. “I am concerned for you that you might pine away through the illusion of separation from Christ and that, just like Eve, you might become blurry-eyed and deceived into believing a lie about yourselves. The temptation was to exchange the truth about our completeness (I am) with the idea of incompleteness (I am not) and shame; thinking that perfection required your toil and all manner of wearisome labor! You will know by the echo within you whether the Jesus someone else preaches is the same Jesus we proclaim to you. You will recognize the same spirit; if it is a different spirit, it is not the same gospel! -2 Corinthians 11:3-4 MBT
The Gospel is simple. We are loved and nothing can separate us from the Trinity’s supernatural love and favor. The first time I heard this my heart jumped with excitement and peace, but my mind doubted it could really be this simple. This caused me to question whether to believe what my heart believes or to believe what I had previously been taught. Over time this simple truth has set me free and continues to echo in my heart. The Apostle Paul wrote “I have no shame about sharing the good news of Christ with anyone; the powerful rescuing act of God persuades both Jew and Gentile alike. Herein lies the secret of the power of the Gospel; there is no good news in it until the righteousness of God is revealed! The dynamic of the gospel is the revelation of God’s faith as the only valid basis for our belief. The prophets wrote in advance about the fact that God believes that righteousness reveals the life of our design. “Righteousness by his (God’s) faith defines life.” -Romans 1:16-17 MBT.
The truth is Jesus and this is the truth that sets us all free. “Jesus said, “My I am-ness [mirrored in you] is your way; this is your truth and also your life! Every single person can now come face to face with the Father entirely because of my doing.”” -John 14:6 MBT
Jesus has set ALL mankind free, whether we believe or not. Whether we work to earn His love or whether we rest in His love, we are ALL loved. Jesus has saved the entire world and ALL have been reconciled to our Father. This is the good news! We are all His heirs, His children, His creation, and the apple of His eye. This truth is the truth that sets us free. This is the truth that helps us shed the guilt and shame of wrong belief like the clothes we wear, and in this UNCONDITIONAL LOVE we are able to dance naked in the Garden of Pleasure without fear. We are all in the presence of our Father, our Husband (Jesus) and our Comforter (Spirit). Freedom is our inheritance, and living free from guilt and shame is the message and gospel of Jesus. Grace is Jesus personified, and Hyper Grace is the message. The Love that never fails, never gives up.
Paul proclaimed the Gospel of Hyper Grace to the entire world with extreme boldness everywhere he went. Along his way this message challenged the religious system that he had a vast knowledge of. His response to the idea where we need the law to keep us walking the straight and narrow was “It is an insult to the grace of God to prefer Moses to Jesus! If the law could justify you then Jesus wasted his time dying your death!” -Galatians 2:21 MBT.
The message of the Gospel is God loves everyone regardless of age, race, sexual identity, religion, or lack of religion. We have all be saved by Jesus Christ. The Gospel is Jesus. Jesus is the Truth and the Truth will set you free. “Jesus is what God believes about you! In him the righteousness of God is on display in such a way that everyone may be equally persuaded about what God believes about them, regardless of who they are; there is no distinction.” -Romans 3:22 MBT. The Gospel is the too good to be true news! The Gospel proclaims the goodness of our Father. The Gospel is Son focused and never bad behavior or sin focused. The Gospel tells us the truth of who we are and who’s we are.
You are not bound by the effort to please God, He is already pleased with you. “With the freedom found in sonship there is no pretense!” -John 3:36 MBT. You are children of the Most High. His heirs, and His great delight.
Blessings to all of you!!!

One thought on “What is the Truth that sets us Free?”
I had a not so great first impression of Christians as well. I loved reading the part about the author of the shack. Makes me realize I should elaborate if someone asks if I’m a Christian.
